An overview about the 10 years of Industrial mathematics application in the Nors Group
–
“The collaboration with the Eu-Maths-IN network facilitated the implementation of probabilistic modelling, successfully transforming the business challenge into a functional solution (a GUI). The direct benefit for NORS was the ability to accurately estimate pricing, mitigate financial risks, and validate their quotations.”
Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro
Emeritus Professor of Applied Mathematics. University of Santiago de Compostela
Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro is Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). He obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1972 under the supervision of Professor Antonio Valle and has since played a pioneering role in the development of applied mathematics and scientific computing in Spain. His research interests include partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and mathematical modeling of industrial processes, with notable contributions to fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, and energy systems.
Professor Bermúdez has supervised numerous doctoral theses and collaborated extensively with research centers and industry, promoting the transfer of mathematical technology to practical applications. He has served on various national and international scientific committees, co-authored influential textbooks, and published over two hundred research papers. Recipient of several scientific awards, he is widely recognized for his leadership in fostering applied mathematics as a key discipline in engineering and technological innovation.
Uwe Iben (CR/AME CE-AM)
Chief Expert Applied Mathematics in Bosch Global
As the Chief Expert for Applied Mathematics, I am responsible for the subject area of applied mathematics in the Central Research and Advance Engineering of the Robert Bosch GmbH and represent the subject areas in different mathematical communities. Together with a team of associates, we develop new algorithms for simulating of complex models that describe functionalities of components and products. I provide consulting services in the field of applied mathematics for business units and research projects. One focus of my work is the scouting and validation of new algorithms with the focus on computing efficiency to push the virtual validation process of components. In cooperation with universities and research institutes around the world, research is being carried out into new mathematical methods in order to simulate technical problems more efficient.

EU-MATHS-IN (European Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation) is the main European network acting as a knowledge transfer bridge between industrial mathematics research and Europe’s productive sector. It was founded to establish a continent-wide infrastructure that boosts the impact of mathematical sciences on key technologies and business innovation.
This “network of networks” brings together more than 400 research centres and thousands of experts from various national networks across Europe. Its fundamental goal is to serve as the single point of contact (single window) for European industry, offering direct access to advanced tools for modelling, simulation, and optimisation. Furthermore, EU-MATHS-IN focuses on providing customised solutions to companies’ challenges, delivering added value and acting as a driving force for innovation through bespoke mathematical models.
